Are lands of your country subject to foreign investments?

On April 26th 2012, the International Land Coalition (ILC) officially launched the land matrix (http://landportal.info/landmatrix/get-the-picture). This tool allows you to observe where land-buyers come from, and where they are investing.

The land matrix is an online database gathering information on international land-deals involving more than 200 ha between 2000 and December 2011. The website aims at giving public transparency to the on-going land rush. It is the result of a three years project conducted in partnership by ILC, CIRAD (Centre de Coopération Internation en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement), Centre for Development and Environment (CDE, Univeristy of Bern), GIGA (German Institute for Global and Area Studies) and GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit).

It is based on data gathered from media reports, scientific publications, NGO reports, and official communications. Deals appearing on the land matrix have been confirmed by a number of validation criteria and cross checking. The data is accessible on various forms: map, schemes, tables, and the website is very interactive. A report that analysis the data is available (Ward Anseeuw, Mathieu Boche, Thomas Breu, Markus Giger, Jann Lay, Peter Messerli and Kerstin Nolte. 2012. Transnational Land Deals for Agriculture in the Global South, Analytical Report based on the Land Matrix Database. Number 1: April 2012), as well as the whole database. Readers are also invited to submit information on land deals.

Have a look, it’s worth it!
