Combating imported deforestation: what challenges for science?
17/01/2023
European imports are responsible for about 16% of global deforestation. This figure places Europe in second place, behind China (WWF, 2021). Faced with this observation, the European Union has just laid the foundations for a law banning the import of products linked to deforestation. But everything remains to be done to implement it. This is conditional on filling several gaps in knowledge and research. In a policy brief, experts from the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research, of which CIRAD is a member, have identified these gaps and made several recommendations to decision-makers and donors.

Consuming 'zero deforestation' in Europe: the threat of counterproductive effects in Central Africa
10/01/2023

The future regulation has been the subject of three proposals by the European Commission, the Council of the EU and the European Parliament between November 2021 and September 2022. On 6 December 2022, a preliminary agreement was reached between these three bodies. It stipulates that the various products concerned (soy, beef, cocoa, palm oil, rubber and wood) can no longer be imported into the EU if they come from deforested land, although the technical details are still to be discussed in the coming weeks. The regulation will enter into force in 2023.
